Counseling for Men
You may not know what to call it — or how to fix it.
You know something is affecting you. Maybe it feels like pressure you cannot put down, anger that stays beneath the surface, or silence because you are not sure what to say. You may be struggling in a relationship, questioning your own reactions, or trying to help someone you love without knowing what will actually make a difference.
Counseling can help you understand what is happening, determine what is within your control, and find better ways to respond. You do not need to arrive with the right words or a clear answer. We can figure that out together. Vine Therapy Group is pleased to offer counseling in person at our Summerville, SC location and virtually throughout the state.
Sometimes sadness, anxiety, grief, or discouragement are clear. Other times, you notice the effects before you understand what is underneath them.
Your body stays tense, restless, or constantly on alert
Your patience is shorter than it used to be
You withdraw because talking feels difficult or unproductive
You replay mistakes or feel weighed down by guilt
You feel responsible for fixing something but powerless to change it
You stay busy, distracted, or emotionally numb
You hold everything in until it comes out as anger
You know you are not yourself, but cannot explain why
Emotional distress can affect your body, reactions, relationships, and sense of yourself—even when you cannot yet explain what is happening.
It’s Not Always Emotion At First
There does not have to be one defining problem. Men seek counseling for many different reasons, including:
Common Reasons Men May Seek Counseling
A Direct and Practical Approach
Slow It Down
We begin with what happened, what you noticed, and what you have already tried. Slowing things down helps us identify the physical responses, emotions, and patterns that are difficult to recognize in the moment.
Clarify What’s Yours
We look honestly at your choices and responsibilities without assuming everything rests on you. Together, we identify what you can control, where you have influence, and what belongs to someone else.
Choose How To Respond
Understanding creates options. We identify practical next steps for communicating more clearly, managing reactions, making decisions, setting boundaries, or repairing what has been damaged.
You may not understand what changed between you and your wife or partner. Conversations may quickly become arguments, nothing you say seems to come out correctly, or the two of you may have stopped talking about anything that matters. You may also be dealing with betrayal, separation, uncertainty about the future, or concern for a struggling child or family member.
You can come to counseling individually even when the concern involves someone else. The goal is not to diagnose the person who is not in the room or decide who is right. We can examine the relationship more clearly, identify your needs and responsibilities, strengthen communication and boundaries, and determine your next steps.
When Relationships Are Part of It
Faith Can Be Part of the Work
For Christian men, counseling can include questions about faith, responsibility, marriage, forgiveness, integrity, and the kind of man you believe God is calling you to become. Scripture and your relationship with God can be included in the work in ways that are relevant and meaningful to you.
Faith will not be used to minimize pain, avoid accountability, rush forgiveness, or offer simple answers to complicated problems. Clients of all faiths—and those without a faith background—are treated with dignity and respect.
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
You do not need a perfect explanation of what is wrong or what you need. A consultation gives us an opportunity to discuss what is happening and determine whether working together makes sense. If you’d prefer to schedule an initial full session, we can do that as well. Sessions are held in person at the Summerville, SC location and virtually throughout South Carolina.
